Holy Koloman. The monastery in Melk (Austria)

Saint Coloman was an Irish pilgrim on his way to Jerusalem, being in the border area of Austria, aroused the suspicions of the local population, as spoke a foreign language and his clothes betrayed a foreign origin (he was the son of an Irish king) Soon the locals began to suspect an innocent Christian. When they reached the town of Stokerau, near Vienna, Koloman was arrested perturbed locals, he was accused as a spy, and, without investigation and litigation threw him in jail.

The Holy pilgrim was to stand trial before the people and to prove his innocence. No torture could not extract a confession of espionage, the humility of the pilgrim’s progress did not satisfy anyone, the judge ordered to carve Martyr, hoping under torture to extract confessions. But it did not help them, then they came up with even worse trials. Seeing the humility and perseverance Koloman decided to hang up the Martyr, and with him two criminals-murderers in the woods on dried elderberry shrub.

Within 1.5 years, his incorrupt body was hanging on the tree until a miracle happened… One resident had a dream that his son was healed from a disease, he needs to find the body of a hanged man Koloman, and his son would be healthy. Sent the hunter has found the place and was amazed that the body Koloman remained unharmed. He stuck his spear in the body of the Martyr, to establish the death of a Christian and from the wound poured blood. The hair on his head, on his face grew, the nails on the hands and feet, his body remained untouched by wild animals, while the bodies of two criminals were completely destroyed. In addition, another miracle happened that the shrub on which he was hanged, suddenly turned green and began to bloom. Many miracles that happened then, led to the fact that the people began to venerate Coloman, count Henry I, ordered to carry the relics of Coloman in the monastery of Melk (Austria). The year of the death of the Christian Martyr 1012, date of death may 17 June.

For a long time, Coloman was the patron Saint of Austria, but not only in Austria venerate St. Koloman, in southern Germany, many churches are dedicated to him. Still alive the name Koloman, many works of art music, literature, painting dedicated to him. In our time, when mankind cannot find the way of understanding, Koloman becomes an actual Saint, his life proves how easy it is to become an innocent victim in a foreign country to be misunderstood, to arouse suspicion and distrust of foreigners. Who is strange, who speaks in a foreign language, distrust and fear.

Memorial day was established on October 13, when in 1014 Coloman’s relics were honorably buried in the monastery. Koloman was not officially recognized as a Saint, but his worship spread throughout Austria, southern Germany, numerous churches bear his name. Koloman protects from fires, plague, healing sources of help in different diseases. The elderberry bushes, which I assume was hanged Koloman can be seen in the town of Stokerau in a convent.
